Lesson 6: Energy Skate Park

In pairs, students will use a computer simulation of a skate board park to learn about kinetic and potential energy.

Students Prior Knowledge and Experience
Students have been exposed to the scientific concept of energy, work and power. They have used the International System of Units or SI of Joules and Watts in calculation. They have been introduced to kinetic and potential energy.

Learning Purposes and Links to Learning Area Outcomes and Aspects
This lesson is linked to science learning outcome Energy and Change and the aspect energy types; there are many types of energy: light, sound, chemical, electrical, kinetic, potential, heat and nuclear. Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by moving bodies; gravitational potential energy is the energy possessed by an object because of its height. It is also linked to science learning outcome Working Scientifically, and refers to the skills and processes involved in science. (Department of Education and Training, 2008)

Preparation and Resources
Print off a class set of Activity Sheet 7.  Enough computers with internet access for one per pair of students.

Introduction
Have students work in co-operative
pairs for this lesson. Begin the
lesson by reminding students
of the school policy on internet use
and the consequences for not adhering
to the school policy.

Main Body of Lesson
Hand out Activity Sheet 7 and read through with the class. Clarify any queries regarding work required and have students start on Activity Sheet.

Closure and Transition to Next Lesson
In the last 10 minutes of the lesson go through Activity Sheet with students and see if any of the students had the skater say "cow-a-bunga" by completing a loop the loop.

Student Evaluation
Activity Sheets will be placed in students’ science note books and a participation assessment rubric for group work may also be taken.

Credits
Activity Sheet 7 modified with materials from PhET   (Bowling, 2008).
